Soluble Iron Complexes for Nutrient Delivery, Catalysis, and Process Control
Iron Citrates combine high solubility, controlled iron release, and strong complexing ability, making them valuable in a wide range of technical applications. They can function as stable iron sources in catalyst synthesis, nutrient formulations, ceramic printing, and environmental systems, among others. Their buffering capacity and compatibility with high-pH environments ensure performance in both liquid and solid processes. Manufactured in Germany, our Lohtragon® Iron Citrate portfolio meets the highest standards of purity, consistency, and application safety – including both Ferrous Citrates and Ferric Citrates.
Ferrous Citrate is an inorganic salt with the formula C6H5FeO7. It consists of ferrous cations (Fe2+) and citrate anions (C6H5O73-). In its pure form, it appears as a light green crystalline solid or powder. The compound is sparingly soluble in water and has no distinct odor.
Ferric Citrate, in contrast to Ferrous Citrate, contains ferric cations (Fe3+) instead of ferrous cations (Fe2+) combined with the citrate anion (C6H5O73-). This difference in oxidation state gives it a reddish-brown appearance rather than green. The compound is slightly soluble in water and has no distinct odor.

Interested in Iron Citrates for your application? Looking for a specific grade or regulatory support?
Our technical experts are here to help with:
Iron Citrates are inorganic salts of citric acid and iron. Ferrous Citrates contain Fe²⁺ cations and typically appear as light green crystalline solids or powders, while Ferric Citrates contain Fe³⁺ cations and are reddish-brown. Both are sparingly to slightly soluble in water and are used for controlled iron delivery and complexing in technical applications.
They are produced at our manufacturing facilities in Germany.
Pure Iron Citrates are odorless under standard conditions. At elevated temperatures, decomposition may release faint acidic or metallic odors.
Solid forms such as powders or granules are easier to store, transport with lower weight, and allow flexible preparation of solutions in different concentrations. Solutions, on the other hand, are ready-to-use, enable precise dosing, reduce dust exposure, and can be much more practical in continuous or large-scale processes depending on the customer’s requirements.
Certain grades of Iron Citrates can meet food-contact requirements. Our experts advise on conformity with applicable regulations for food-related uses.
If your required grade or specification is not shown, contact us directly — we can provide tailored solutions or guide you to the most suitable product.
